Exploration Exploration of Natural Honey as a Potential Sex Reversal Agent in Guppy (Poecilia reticulata)

Guppy (Poecilia reticulata) is one of the most popular freshwater ornamental fish with high economic value, particularly in males, which exhibit brighter coloration and more attractive fin morphology than females. Consequently sex ratio manipulation through sex reversal techniques has been explored to increase male production in aquaculture. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of natural honey as an alternative agent for sex reversal in guppies. The research was conducted from October to November 2025 at the Mini Hatchery, Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries, Hasanuddin University. The treatments consisted of A (honey 30 ml/L), B (honey 60 ml/L), C (honey 90 ml/L), D (17α-methyl testosterone 0.5 mg/L) and E (control without honey). Pregnant female broodstock were immersed in treatment solutions for 24 hours and subsequently reared until parturition. The observed parameters included the percentage of male offspring and larval survival rate. The results indicated that treatment B (60 ml/L honey) produced the highest male percentage at 71%, followed by A (67%), E (57%) and D (56%) while treatment C caused broodstock mortality resulting in no offspring. The highest survival rate (100%) was observed in treatments A, B, and E. These findings demonstrate that honey at appropriate concentrations can act as a potential natural agent for inducing sex reversal in guppies while maintaining high larval survival. However, excessive honey concentration may induce toxic effects leading to broodstock mortality. Therefore, the optimal concentration of honey for sex reversal in guppies is 60 ml/L.
