Abstract

This research explores public perception of climate change and its impact on small pelagic fish resources in Ternate Island, North Maluku. Small pelagic fish, such as sardines and anchovies, are crucial for the local economy and food security, but are vulnerable to rising sea temperatures and changing ocean patterns caused by climate change. The study uses a mixed-methods approach, including surveys with 200 respondents and in-depth interviews with 15 key informants, to gather comprehensive data. The findings reveal that community awareness of climate change is rising, showing a positive impact from education and communication efforts. However, there is still variation in the depth of understanding and a prevailing sense of pessimism about the effectiveness of individual mitigation efforts. Climate change has significantly affected fishing patterns, leading to reduced catches, shifts in fishing grounds, and higher operational costs. The research emphasizes the urgent need for enhanced education, capacity building, and collaborative policies to ensure the sustainability of fish resources and help local communities adapt to these mounting environmental challenges.
