Biological Aspects of the Pearl Lobster (Panulirus ornatus) as a Sustainable Management Effort in the Waters of Pangkep Regency

Lobster and crayfish are valuable fishery commodities with a stable and growing global demand. The pearl lobster (Panulirus ornatus) is particularly sought after in export markets such as China, Japan, and Vietnam. In Indonesia, pearl lobsters fetch high prices both live and processed, making them a primary target for coastal fishermen. This study examined the biological aspects of pearl lobsters, focusing on size structure, sex ratio, growth patterns, length, and weight. Sampling was conducted twice monthly, measuring size, sex ratio, and length-weight relationships. A total of 203 pearl lobsters were observed, consisting of 90 males and 113 females. The sex ratio was 1:1.2 (44.33% males, 55.67% females), with chi-square analysis indicating no significant difference, suggesting that male and female proportions were balanced around Salemo Island. The size structure ranged from 15 to 103 mm carapace length (CL), with dominant catches at 45 mm CL for males and 50 mm CL for females. The average condition factor was 1.12 for males and 1.15 for females, reflecting good body condition. Growth patterns for length and weight in both sexes exhibited negative allometric growth, indicating that weight increases at a slower rate than length. These findings provide important biological insights that can support the sustainable management and exploitation of pearl lobster populations in Indonesian waters.
