Biological Aspects of Mackerel Scad (Decapterus macarellus) Caught By Purse Seine In Banda Waters

This study aimed to analyze the biological aspects of the mackerel scad (Decapterus macarellus) caught by purse seine in the Banda waters. Sampling was conducted from June to August 2025. Data on total length and body weight were collected to analyze size distribution, length–weight relationship, and length at first capture (Lc) using the logistic curve model by Sparre and Venema (1999). The results showed that the total length of the fish ranged from 11.5 to 31.5 cm, with the dominant size class between 20–22 cm. The length–weight relationship indicated an isometric growth pattern (b = 3.01; R² = 0.98), suggesting proportional growth between length and weight. The length at first capture was 21.5 cm with a determination coefficient R² = 0.965, while the length at first maturity (Lm) reported in previous studies ranged from 24–27 cm. This indicates that most fish were caught before reaching sexual maturity, implying that the purse seine fishery in Banda waters is not yet fully selective and may exert pressure on young fish populations. These findings provide important insights for the development of sustainable management strategies, including the regulation of mesh size and fishing seasons to ensure the conservation of mackerel scad stocks in the Banda region.
