Community Structure and Condition of Seagrass Meadows in the Waters of Satangnga Island, Takalar Regency

Seagrass ecosystems play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystems. Information on the community structure and condition of seagrass beds is still very limited, with no information available on Satangnga Island in Takalar Regency. The methods used included quadrant transects (1 m × 1 m) for species identification, density and cover measurements, and ecological index analysis. The study identified seven seagrass species: Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, Cymodocea rotundata, Halophila ovalis, Halophila minor, Halodule uninervis, and Syringodium isoetifolium. Cymodocea rotundata had the highest density (65.89 teg./m²), while Thalassia hemprichii had the highest cover (30.11%). Seagrass density ranges from 57,857 to 116,714 teg./m2, categorized as sparse to moderately dense. Seagrass cover ranges from 30.29% to 58.29%, indicating that the seagrass is considered damaged or unhealthy, as its cover is less than 60%. Management through reducing anthropogenic pressure, regular monitoring, and rehabilitation through transplantation are recommended to support ecosystem recovery.
