Postharvest losses and quality deterioration are major challenges in the capture fisheries sector, affecting food security and economic sustainability. Conventional preservation methods, such as chilling, freezing, and the use of chemicals, have limitations related to safety, environmental impacts, and consumer demand for natural products. Biotechnology approaches offer promising alternatives by utilizing microorganisms, bioactive metabolites, biodegradable biopolymers, molecular detection technologies, and biosensors to improve postharvest management and quality control of fishery products. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) synthesizes studies published between 2020 and 2026, assessing effectiveness, technological trends, and research gaps related to biotechnology interventions in capture fisheries products. The findings indicate that microbial biopreservation, edible coatings, enzymatic treatments, molecular diagnostics, and nanobiotechnology have significant potential to extend shelf life, ensure safety, and maintain the sensory quality of products. However, most studies remain at the laboratory scale, with limited industrial application and system integration. This review serves as a comprehensive reference for researchers and industry practitioners in developing sustainable, innovative, and efficient postharvest systems.
