This study examines the effectiveness of two modified fish trap (bubu) designs permanent box trap and collapsible box trap in capturing demersal fish in the waters of Jefman Island, Southwest Papua, Indonesia. A total of eight traps (four units of each type) were deployed at depths of 3–10 meters for 12–24 hours per unit. The results showed that the permanent box trap caught 124 fish (52.5%), while the collapsible box trap caught 112 fish (47.5%), out of a total of 236 demersal fish captured. In terms of species composition, the permanent trap was more effective in targeting economically valuable species such as Epinephelus bleekeri (grouper), whereas the collapsible trap tended to catch more active species like Chlorurus bowersi (parrotfish). Both trap designs demonstrated environmentally friendly characteristics, causing no damage to benthic habitats and allowing for the release of undersized or non-target fish in viable condition. From a social perspective, these traps support small-scale fisheries by being cost-effective, efficient, and operable by traditional fishers without altering their established fishing practices. Considering technical, ecological, and social aspects, this study recommends the permanent box trap as a selective fishing gear suitable for promoting sustainable fisheries and empowering coastal communities.
