Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the influence of socio-economic factors on the income of small-scale fishers in Ternate Island. Five independent variables were examined: age, education level, business capital, number of household dependents, and catch volume. The study used a quantitative survey approach conducted in Dufa-Dufa, Jambula, and Kampung Makassar Timur, Ternate, in March–April 2026. A total of 100 respondents were selected using a census/total sampling approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and structured questionnaires and analyzed using multiple linear regression, including the F-test, t-test, coefficient of determination, and classical assumption tests. The results showed that the regression model was significant simultaneously (F = 88.729; p < 0.001), with an R² of 0.825, indicating that 82.5% of the variation in fishers’ income was explained by the variables included in the model. Partially, business capital (β = 0.5; p = 0.003) and catch volume (β = 46,596.6; p < 0.001) had positive and significant effects on income. Age (p = 0.886), education (p = 0.067), and household dependents (p = 0.105) were not significant. The findings indicate that production-related factors, particularly access to capital and catch productivity, are more decisive for income than individual socio-economic characteristics. Policy priorities therefore include expanding access to productive capital, improving fishing productivity and appropriate technology, strengthening collective marketing, and improving access to market and weather information.
