Abstract

Penaeid shrimp fisheries represent an important component of coastal capture fisheries in tropical regions; however, the use of trammel nets is often associated with high levels of by-catch. This study aimed to analyze catch composition across different fishing depths and to evaluate the effect of depth on the quantity and proportion of penaeid shrimp and by-catch in the coastal waters of South Sorong, Southwest Papua, Indonesia. Field experiments were conducted from June to August 2025 across three depth strata (0–5 m, 6–10 m, and 11–15 m) using a standardized trammel net, with a total of 17 fishing trips. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD tests. The results showed that the total catch consisted of 1,759 individuals of penaeid shrimp and 2,757 individuals of by-catch, with by-catch dominating at 61.06%. The highest catch for both shrimp and by-catch occurred in shallow waters (0–5 m). The shrimp catch was dominated by Penaeus merguiensis and Penaeus monodon, which exhibited a strong preference for shallow habitats. ANOVA results indicated that depth had a highly significant effect on both shrimp catch (p < 0.001) and by-catch (p < 0.001). Increasing depth was associated with a reduction in by-catch, but also a decline in shrimp catch. These findings reveal a trade-off between fishing productivity and gear selectivity, highlighting depth as a key factor in optimizing shrimp fisheries management toward more efficient and sustainable practices.
