Abstract

The research aims to describe the interplay between humans and mangroves, to define the many types of community dependence on mangroves, and to consider the consequences of this relationship for mangrove conservation efforts. This study employs a descriptive qualitative technique supplemented by simple quantitative data. Data from observations, focus group discussions, questionnaires, and documentation were evaluated using qualitative descriptive analysis. The analysis results were then synthesized to describe the interaction between humans and mangroves. The research findings show that the human–mangrove relationship is reflected in ecological, economic, and socio-cultural benefits. Ecologically, mangroves function as coastal protection and as habitats for aquatic biota. Economically, local communities utilize mangrove resources and aquatic species with high intensity, typically 2–4 days per week, yielding about 4–8 kg of fish, 2–5 kg of crabs, 1–2 kg of shellfish, and 1–3 kg of shrimp. In the socio-cultural dimension, mangroves are closely associated with customary practices and local knowledge. The community depends on mangroves for food, medicine, building materials, firewood, cash income, and other essentials. The community's dependence on mangroves includes their use as a source of food, medicine, building materials, firewood, cash income, and other necessities. The implications of the human-mangrove relationship in Arar Village necessitate a strategy that balances the ecological, social, and economic aspects. Sustainable mangrove protection requires bolstering community capacity, acknowledging local rights and expertise, and promoting cross-sectoral policies.
