Abstract

This study aims to estimate the biomass and litter carbon stock in traditional agroforestry land in Teluk Dore Village, Makbon District, Sorong Regency. Agroforestry, as a multistrata land use system based on local wisdom, has potential for storing organic carbon, particularly through the litter component. The research was conducted on an area of 1.2 hectares using purposive sampling on 30 plots, each measuring 1 × 1 meter. Litter biomass was calculated using the destructive sampling method and analyzed through the dry weight approach with a carbon content conversion factor of 47%. The results showed that the total litter biomass was 26.587 kg, with an average of 0.886 kg per plot. The litter carbon content reached 12.825 kg, with an average of 0.427 kg per plot. The highest carbon value was recorded in Plot 24 (0.851 kg), while the lowest was in Plot 22 (0.045 kg). After conversion to per hectare units, the total carbon stock reached 128.245 kg/ha, with an overall total of 513 kg for the 1.2 ha area. The variation among plots was influenced by vegetation structure, canopy cover, and land-use intensity. These results indicate that traditional agroforestry systems play a significant role in climate change mitigation through short-term carbon storage in litter. Sustainable vegetation management and preservation of culturally-based agroforestry systems are crucial for enhancing carbon sequestration capacity. This study also contributes baseline data for the development of environmental policies, agroforestry management, and ecosystem-based mitigation programs
